Geboren als Shelton Jackson Lee op 20 maart 1957 in Atlanta. Broer van Joie Lee. Hij studeerde aan de Tisch School of the Arts van de New York University, waar hij in 1978 zijn master behaalde in film en televisie. Zijn eerste film was She’s Gotta Have It uit 1986. Hij maakt voornamelijk sociaal bewogen films, waarin thema’s als racisme, criminaliteit en interraciale relaties een belangrijk rol spelen. Hij werd verscheidene keren genomineerd voor een Oscar, Golden Globe, Gouden Beer, Gouden Leeuw of Gouden Palm, maar wist deze tot heden nooit te winnen.
