Ze is voornamelijk bekend van haar hoofdrol in de televisieserie "The Golden Girls" (1985-1992), waarin ze Blanche Devereaux speelde. De andere hoofdrollen werden vervuld door Bea Arthur (Dorothy Petrillo Zbornak), Betty White (Rose Nylund) en Estelle Getty (Sophia Petrillo). Ze werd viermaal genomineerd voor een Emmy en won deze eenmaal. Ze kreeg ook drie Golden Globe-nominaties.
